One ‘Young Sheldon’ Character in ‘Georgie & Mandy’ Will Connect Directly to ‘The Big Bang Theory’

His appearance on this new show demonstrates that he’s still a big part of Mary’s life. This could explain a lot about how older Mary behaves when she appears in The Big Bang Theory.

Who Is Pastor Jeff in the ‘Big Bang Theory’ Universe?

Pastor Jeff Difford first appears in Young Sheldon as the Pastor of the local Baptist church that the Cooper family attends. He’s also Mary’s boss, as she works at the church with him. At first, he is mostly seen butting heads with Sheldon (Iain Armitage), who makes a point to ask complicated questions about God and faith during Sunday School that annoys Pastor Jeff. While Sheldon wants an explanation rooted in science, Pastor Jeff tries to frustratingly explain things through faith that Sheldon continuously refutes with science. Their back and forth without ever getting anywhere is one of the funniest dynamics on the show.

It is first known that Jeff is married to a beautiful woman named Selena (Zuleyka Silver), who doesn’t speak English, and it appears she does not truly love him. It’s implied that she is only with him for money and potentially even to stay in the country. He misrepresented his financial situation, leading to Selena going on shopping sprees he couldn’t afford.

Th… and when Selena leaves Jeff, he seeks solace with Mary and the Cooper family. In his eyes, however, God was listening to his troubles, and he has a run-in with a female police officer named Robyn (Mary Grill). She pulls him over, and there’s a spark between them. They eventually start dating and get married rather quickly so they can consummate the relationship. They have a baby together and Pastor Jeff is elated to become a father.

Fans know that Georgie and Mandy’s marriage doesn’t last, and already in the first episodes of ‘Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage,’ signs show why.

In terms of his relationships with others, he has often served as a mediator. He helps, for example, when Mary, Connie, and Brenda (Melissa Peterman) aren’t getting along and encourages them to talk out their issues and put aside their differences. Mary sought counsel from him on numerous occasions as well, whether it had to do with her marriage, trouble with the kids, or even…

The biggest and saddest storyline with Pastor Jeff, however, is when he encourages Mary to take a leave of absence from the church when he learns about Georgie’s (Montana Jordan) baby out of wedlock. He says it’s because of the tight-knit community and talks about forgiveness and judgement, yet contradicts himself when he essentially fires her because she would reflect badly on him.

The relationship becomes awkward between them from there, but Pastor Jeff continues to publicly shun the family at church in a passive aggressive way. However, he is not without sin himself. He hides the truth when he learns his wife has been renting…and Fatal Attraction that wouldn’t be approved by the church. When Robyn buys a new TV with money she found that was clearly from Connie’s house after the tornado hit, the guilt eventually overwhelms Jeff, and he gifts the TV to George (Lance Barber).

how Pastor Jeff Impacts Mary’s Life in ‘Young Sheldon’

It is confirmed that Pastor Jeff will appear in an episode of Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage for the purpose of serving as mediator between Mary and Georgie’s mother-in-law Audrey (Rachael Bay Jones). The two have never gotten along, holding fundamentally different beliefs. Plus, Mary never liked how Audrey treated her son and her holier-than-thou attitude.

Despite Pastor Jeff ostracizing Mary following Mandy’s pregnancy announcement, it’s confirmed in Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage that Mary has begun working at the church again, presumably accepted now that Georgie and Mandy have officially gotten married. With… this means she will likely have thrown herself more into her job, and thus her religion and deep-seated dedication to it. By proxy, this also includes Pastor Jeff.

When Mary is seen decades later in The Big Bang Theory, played by Perry’s real-life mother, Laurie Metcalf, she appears to be very much the same as she was before. But she’s also much harsher, more judgemental, and even racist. She makes flippant comments about Sheldon and his friends. She could even be downright offensive. Some of this behavior emulates what fans have seen of Pastor Jeff in Young Sheldon as well. Despite being a man of the lord, he could be very judgemental, sometimes even insulting, at times.

‘Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage’ went on a short break for the holiday season, but it’s coming back soon.

But with Georgie and Mandy having their own separate lives, Sheldon away at university, and Missy in her rebellious stage, Mary is left with no one to lean on but Pastor Jeff. It’s likely that she became closer and closer with him and took on many of his personality traits, both good and bad.

Mary has shown a softer side. She’s always there for Sheldon when he needs her. She accepts Amy (Mayim Bialik). And she does have nice things to say when she isn’t fighting with Leonard’s mother or taking off for a romantic rendezvous with Leonard’s father. But…she does and says, and it appears in The Big Bang Theory that her faith hasn’t wavered, a likely result of her growing closeness with Pastor Jeff.

The fact that he is back to help Mary deal with her conflict with Audrey shows that he cares deeply about her and has a lot of influence on her. Whether this is a positive or negative thing depends on how viewers see the woman Mary evolved into in her later years.

Pastor Jeff Molded Mary Into the Woman She Became in ‘The Big Bang Theory’

It can be argued that Pastor Jeff played a large role in molding Mary following George’s death. The issue with this is that while he promotes himself as being moral and just, he exhibits greedy and judgemental behavior. In some instances, especially in the beginning, it seems as though Pastor Jeff is more interested in bringing people to the congregation to make money to allow him to keep up with his lifestyle, including that of his then-wife, Selena. While he seems deeply devoted to God, some of his actions suggest that his motivations aren’t always sincere.

So, when Mary exhibits similarly judgemental behavior, delivering passive-aggressive remarks or insulting people under her breath, a lot of that may have come from Pastor Jeff. She viewed him as the most moral person she knew and thus felt any of his actions were justified in the name of religion.

‘The Big Bang Theory’ universe grew into spin-offs ‘Young Sheldon’ and ‘Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage,’ but very few characters are in all three.

He is hypocritical as well, like when he delivers a sermon about forgiveness, acceptance, and community, then shuns the Coopers, or when he tries to get Connie to remove all questionable videos from her rental store when his wife is one of the biggest renters of them. Mary was an adult when she met Pastor Jeff, but she leaned on him. He was her source of guidance, and as his …will suggest, he was always by her side and could very well still be by the time she appears in The Big Bang Theory.

Mary loved her son, Sheldon, even if she constantly worried about him. She regretted not being there for Missy when she needed her, though she criticized what she became without publicly taking ownership of her part. She had some pride in Georgie but consistently degraded her eldest son, despite his success, talking critically about him in her The Big Bang Theory appearances.

The older Mary seen in The Big Bang Theory is a reflection of Pastor Jeff in many ways. His presence in her life permeated through Young Sheldon, and she continued to emulate him and his teachings, likely because he never left her side, as will be confirmed in Georgie & Mandy’s First MarriageStream Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage on …
